Shonan Electric Railway (Present-day Keikyu Corporation)
In 1930, the Shonan Electric Railway opened the line between Kogane-cho in Yokohama and Uraga in Yokosuka. Since Yokosuka’s terrain features many mountains that extend to the shoreline, the construction of tunnels was essential to the railway. After a highly challenging construction project, 14 tunnels and 1 bridge were completed (※). The Keikyu Corporation is an important heritage of modern industrialization and continues to provide service to this day. ※Number within Yokosuka at the time of construction in 1930.
