According to records, as Yamato-Takeru-no-Mikoto was crossing the seas to conquer Ezo (present-day Hokkaido), the raging waters threatened his journey. In order to quell the anger of the sea god, Ototachibana-hime sacrificed herself to the seas which allowed her husband safe passage to Kazusa Province (area within present-day Chiba Prefecture).
