Former Yokosuka Heavy Artillery Regiment Gate
In 1891, the Yokosuka Heavy Artillery Regiment established new barracks at Iriyamazu. The brick wall located beside the school gate to Sakura Elementary School and Sakamoto Junior High School is the only remnant of the Heavy Artillery Regiment. There is also a hill nearby nicknamed Chikokuzaka, or “tardy hill,” and it is said that troops returning to the barracks would run up this hill to get back before curfew.
To everyone who is considering visiting Yokosuka
