Housed in Yokosuka, these Buddhist sculptures brim with power and realism.
Unkei
Unkei was a sculptor of Buddhist images during the early Kamakura Period (late 12th century – early 13th century). His masterfully carved Buddhist sculptures brim with power and realism that can still be seen to this day. There are about 17 extant works of Unkei authenticated by his inscription, and Jorakuji Temple in Ashina, Yokosuka houses five of Unkei’s Buddhist sculptures that were commissioned by Wada Yoshimori, the first administrative director for the Board of Retainers of the Kamakura Shogunate.
